“I have nothing to say to our fans except thank you. Thank you so much for standing by us. I have confidence that we can repay you with our music, so I’d like it if you can trust Big Bang one more time. I’m a zodiac dragon, and since the coming year is the year of the dragon, I hope that everything you do brings success to you. I sincerely hope you take care of your health and wish you a happy new year.”—Taeyang (111231 Star News Interview)
Those of you who were with us last year may remember our2010 End of Year Spotlighton the girls. Given the PHENOMENAL year 2NE1 has had in 2011, both as a team and indiviudally, we thought what better way to end the year then by Reliving the Moments that made this year unforgettable for Blackjacks all over the world.
First up, the roof destroyer — conquerer of corn stalks and hearts the world over, the Incomparable Park Bom!
Last year Bom became a hot topic for many reasons, including her ever-changing hair and undying her love affair with corn. Although in 2011 she handed over the hair-color-changing baton to maknae, that didn’t keep one creative fan from paying homage to her to-die-for locks:
In 2011, Bommie had even more reasons to “whip her hair back and forth”, Blackjacks were treated to a more confident, more dazzling Bommie then ever who became a force to be reckoned with both on and off the music charts.
BLOSSOMING LIVE PERFORMANCE SKILLS
Bom ended 2010 on an “Oh Yeah” high showering fans with great performance after great performance of the catchy track with labelmatesGD & TOP. Just a few short months later, she returned to kick off 2NE1’s 2nd Mini Album digital singles promotions with the massive Juggernaut that was the woefully under-promoted “Don’t Cry”. Though she didn’t promote much, she did release a message that had fans looking over their shoulders. Who could forget her cryptic statement to Blackjacks, “I’m watching you guys”.
Over the course of 2011, Bom improved even further in her live vocal stability and command of the stage. And by improve we mean KILLED IT! With the release of “Don’t Cry”, Bom’s vocals got the fans yearning for more. The single was an instant hit, topping charts and tearing roofs down for days on end (see below). Although the studio version was lovely, nothing can compare to the live versions.
Fans bombarded and begged and pleaded to YGE so much they granted us ONE music show performance of the stellar track. Bomimpressed with her Inkigayo performance, then on. Though the start of the song saw her succumb to nerves, she was able to regroup and complete the song well. It wasn’t perfect, but it was near and it certainly gave everyone goosebumps (in a good way, of course)
What is 2NE1 without their main vocalist? Park Bom delivered her verses smoothly with emotions in every performance. From cutely shouting “I Am The Best” to the soulful vocals in “Lonely” and “Ugly”, everyone heard her loud and clear, the uniquely Bom color added to 2NE1’s songs and her own solos.
As of August 2011, Park Bom has been six years in the making. Years of auditioning and being rejected, then several more years as a trainee, and finally debuting and her group’s first solo concert. Despite her nerves, she determinedly and magnificently ascended from the sky in a blindingly beautiful and contemporary wedding dress to leave the crowd stunned and on the brink of tears. Park Bom, together with her equally talented and beautiful sister performed with the confidence and grace we always knew she had.
Even after her wonderful performances at NOLZA Bom wasn’t finished wowing fans. Last month she became very ill just days before the much-anticipated MAMA Awards. So sick in fact, that YGE was even considering having her lip-synch, which as we all know is a completely LAST RESORT for YGE artists (and to date 2NE1 has never lip-synched). Many fans watched anxiously as 2NE1 took the stage to perform their first song “Lonely”.
We needlessly worried as Bommie gave us what was arguably one of her best vocal performances of the song. She was simply flawless.
She also literally SHOCKED fans who attended the 2011 YG Family Concert by joining, lyrical genius Tablo on stage to sing his hit “Bad”. Bom was able to make the song her own, despite the pressure of being compared to the song’s original featuring artist, Jinsil.
Not only did Bom improve on her vocals, the goddess also improved on her dancing and stage presence. With the release of “I Am The Best”, Bom proved that she was not lacking as the whole group moved in-sync, with their oozing swag. The lovely 8D alien has also learnt how to play with the crowd in her own way, teasing her fans in her own dorky ways, like forming hearts to the crowd.
It’s too bad we never got the live version of this lil Bom gem:
VARIETY QUEEN B?
As the Teddy-dubbed 8-D alien, Bom continued to show her multi-faceted side this year, especially via 2NE1TV. From her adorable aeygo when she’s talking about food, to her more somber side as she relates her inner feelings, 2NE1’s unnie entranced and delighted fans throughout the year.
So what exactly makes a Variety Queen (of King), well according to MNET Wide News, the characteristics include: ‘cute’, ‘an insatiable appetite for meat’, ‘highly energetic’, ‘loved by all generations’, ‘speaks extremely well’, etc. Looks like even the MNET PDs have seen Bom’s knack for variety, in their ranking of ‘celebrities with the best potential to fill Kang Ho Dong’s shoes’, Bommie was the only idol on the short list in the best appetite for meat category…seems like they know our Bom well
If you think that Bom will let Japan off the hook with her out of the world character then all of you are definitely wrong. It’s not just Korea that is caught in the funny tentacles of Bom’s quirkiness, Japan has caught Bom fever as well.
Unstoppable Bom is unstoppable as 2NE1 hit Japan!
In radio show after radio show, TV appearance after TV appearances, Bom’s oddly bemusing behavior, ingenious quips, and gut-busting responses are simply a joy to behold. Alien Bom landed on Japan and through their different interviews from different Japanese shows, you will always expect that Bom will do/say something which will make you LOL, LMAO or ROFL.
A CLASSIC Bom in Japan moment would have to be the tear-inducing funniness as 2NE1 is asked to describe their personality, Bom asserts AT FIRST that she is a rainbow, then she changes it to something else much to the exasperation of CL. The segment starts at about 4:45, but the whole thing is worth a rewatch.

Even a simple thing like twitter provides endless moments of hilarity for fans and the general public alike. On October 16th, Bom tweeted, ”Good morning~~~( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ everyone~*:.｡..｡.:*･’(*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)’･*:.｡. .｡.:*･゜ﾟ･* Today I’m saying Good Morning from Japan~~~*^_____^*” which surprised fans after almost 9 months hiatus from the twitter world. Blackjacks around the world poured their greetings after. She then changed her twitter profile picture to a eye-popping bubble bath picture. Much to the chagrin of fanboys, she shortly changed the pic to a more “user-friendly” photo
No worries, we eventually were able to see the source of the stunning bathtub photo via 2NE1’s colorful and fun PV for their Japanese Go Away single.
Less than two weeks later, Bom was back to her antics when she tells us she is moving to a new twitter because “somebody changed ma info.. & password….T.T”. Luckily, things seem to be smooth sailing now and Bom has come to love twitter as much as most of the rest of us
THE DIGITAL MONSTER AWAKENS
QUOTE ”For any song, when Park Bom’s voice is added, it becomes a better song. It’s a great voice. If nuna doesn’t do it, our album can’t be released.” - G-Dragon
Proving that she’s not just a one-hit wonder and You & I’s great success wasn’t a fluke, Bom made a breakthrough this year and established herself as a powerful solo artist. Last April, Bom spearheaded 2NE1’s comeback by releasing her solo single, ‘Don’t Cry’.
Upon release, the song climbed up the charts and reached the top in no time, even tearing Melon’s roof 5 times in 2 days which is very hard to do. ‘Don’t Cry’ received not only an all-kill status but a PERFECT ALL-KILL which means Bom has managed to top not only the Digital Real-time Charts but also the Mobile and Daily Charts.
No one expected that the single would be so successful, not even Bom herself.
QUOTE YG representatives stated on this day the song released, through a telephone call with OSEN, “Park Bom’s song was released online, and at approximately 1AM, she phoned Teddy who had produced the song and burst into tears. The moment Park Bom had started crying, Teddy knew something was up and took the call while shocked and nervous. “
They added, “By the looks of it, when she had saw that her song placed #1 on various sites, Park Bom wanted to express her thanks to Teddy. Also, as the first ‘runner’ in the 2NE1 comeback, she was swarmed by relief and burden at the same time, and thus started crying. It seems that she was very worried to lead the 2NE1 comeback with her solo.” — cr: GEE@ygladies
They didn’t even plan on promoting it on music shows. But due to popular demand, YG decided to showcase live performances through YG ON AIR which Bom made her first live ‘Don’t Cry’ performance. The brainchild of Teddy and Lydia Paek, the song ushered in a new era for 2NE1 and won both Bom and 2NE1 new fans and heaps of praise. It seems like Bom does not only make the roof leak but she can also crash the servers down as visitors flooded the site on the first episode making the servers crash.
After the success of ‘Don’t Cry’, who would have thought Bom would add and even BIGGER hit to her repetoire. When news spread that Bom would have a song collaboration on the uber-popular Infinity Challenge charity CD, there were good expectations but nothing prepared us for the MAMMOTH success of the song.
Park Bom’s featuring for GD and Park Myung Soo’s song for the Infinity Challenge Festival wasn’t just a hit, it crashed through Melon’s roof more times than ever before and has appeared on near the top of every single digital list in South Korea, second only to Roly Poly in overall sales. It seemed like Park Bom’s voice works as a lucky charm to any song as ‘I Have An Affair’ topped the charts for weeks and weeks.
AWESOME 2NE1TV MOMENTS
No 2NE1 member recap would be complete without mention of the perfection that is 2NE1TV. This year marked the return of Season 1’s PD Choi. Though some may have been disappointed with the pacing of this season and the more individualized episodes, NOONE could argue that whenever Bom came on the screen she was absolutely hilarious. She can make the most normal of things—breathing in canned oxygen for example—into TV gold.
Aside from the funny and adorable sides of Bom, we were privy to her quieter, self-reflective side as well. In a candid moment after performing “Ugly” and “Hate You” for the first time in Episode 6, she revealed how she’d been thinking of her future and how she couldn’t image her life without music. Of course, she then introduced her one and only surviving plant, Greeny, but it’s these juxtapositions in thoughts that make Bom that much more interesting and relatible.
Dara is surely telling the truth when she said that Bom is a rare comedian born every a hundred years. Proof of this are her endless antics on 2NE1TV Season 3. Even Park Go Eun, Bom’s older sister, testified that she also act like that when she’s at home and she’s worried if it’s really just okay for Bom to be so real like that. (Don’t worry Bommie’s unnie, we love Bom like that!)
Thanks to Benny (Cornkid21@YT) for making these fabulous compilations of all of the wonderful Bom moments!
Hey Bom, we are still waiting on the bungee jump…Blackjacks haven’t forgetten.
NEWLY MINTED “Apostle of Justice” TO FANS
Just recently, Bom became a hot issue for scolding her manager who she thought had pushed a fan. It’s this kind of love and protection that has won the Dazzling Diva thousands of fans the world over. That, and her impossibly long legs
. With an increase in overseas promotions, more international fans were able to meet and interact with our Lovely Lady Springand all came away from the experience gushing about her beauty, cuteness, and those amazing vocals. She even showed YGL some love waving our lightstick at Nolza.
It was a memorable year for Park Bom and Bombshells, we will leave you you with just one of Bommie’s precious 2011 moments, her lovable NIKON CF.
The countdown to 2012 begins with 2NE1’s Head Unnie Bom, expect more in the upcoming days!
